Friday Guest Bangers (week 48)
by Hemmingsen
Tom Collins aka. Mads Lerager holds residencies at Culture Box with the monthly house night Random and at Jazzhouse with the Voodoo Disco nights. With a foot in both the disco and the house camp here’s some of his favorite tracks this week.
Craig Bratley – Birdshell (Burnt Island Casuals Remix)
Instruments Of Rapture is The Revenge’s label. He revealed to me when he played at Jazzhouse last month that he’ll only put out 10 releases and then close down the label so this is the sixth one. Until now he has mostly used the label to put out a lot of disco edits made by himself but this release sees a more original track from some guy i have never heard of before. I chose the remix by The Revenge under the guise of Burnt Island Casuals. This is a slow groovy disco-thing with a catchy synth theme. I am a sucker for the breakdown that samples some old record and then jumps back into the track.
Jacques Renualt – Pleasure
This guy from New York has a way of producing new tracks that just sounds like they were made at least 30 years ago. I don’t know how he does it but it probably involves a lot of sampling. He’s most likely the next big thing to come out the whole DFA game. Sweaty funky disco with that bottom end you need nowadays. Awesome!
Black Magic – Freedom (Make It Funky) (Color 4 Frankie’s Dub – Radio Slave Edit)
Strictly Rhythm has put out its fair share of compilations all of them probably containing Witch Doctor. Therefore it’s a delight to see the new compilation slash mix cd from them this time compiled by Radio Slave. He has chosen a bunch of less obvious tracks and edited them a bit for modern sound systems. This track from 1996 pretty much sums up why i love that label. Bouncy house with jazzy chords and female vocal bits.
Tornado Wallace – Always Twirling.
The label Delusions of Grandeur is one of those few labels where i just get whatever the releasen without listening before hand. You can find records from this label in my sets weather it’s a disco set or a house set because it has that crossover appeal. And this record might be one of the best yet. Slow, deep and really unique production with gliding synths and rolling snares.
Soulmate – Set Fire To My Feet (Chez Damier Chicago Old School Mix)
Here’s a rare vinyl only release from Chez Damier doing a rework where he really sounds like he used to do back in the day when he released records with Ron Trent on Prescription. Chez Damier didn’t release new music for quite a long time but started again recently, probably because of the renewed interest in classic house music. Thank god for that because his new productions is some of my favorite tracks. Like this one.
Lawrence vs. Seth Troxler – Miles In Aphrika (youANDme Edit)
youANDme out of Berlin makes this undefinable music somewhere in-between techno and house, i think they’re rather unique in all they do. They have this label CUTZ.ME where they put out edits of other peoples tracks, this is from the third record in the series. This time they have created this powerful combination of Seth Troxlers Aphrika and Lawrences Miles. I always adored everything Lawrence put’s out, he has those melancholic synths i am just a sucker for. And with that lunatic Troxlers vocals on top makes this a winner this week.
